Sanitization kit for domestic RO

The Sanitization kit for domestic RO is necessary for the process of sanitizing and sterilization when installing or servicing replacement filters and membranes of a domestic reverse osmosis system. This process is necessary for whatever make or model of your reverse osmosis system.

How to Sanitise your Reverse Osmosis System

Please note the items will not be supplied with a manual, so please note the steps below.

There are two places you can use the sanitising housing.

1) Flow to entry point, i.e. the first filter

2) Flow to the Tank

It important to first note that sanitising must never be done with filters in place. With filter housings you must take the filter out. This is especially important for the membrane. Once you take the filters out, you may notice the housing and housing head are a bit dirty. If so, take a cloth to clean the head and bowl clean. Make sure you have Silicone Grease / Plumbers Grease to hand, as o-rings need to be regreased if they are dry.

Entry point:

  1. First turn on the tap to drain the tank. When finished shut off the incoming water at the inlet / feed in / supply valve. Turn off the tank valve to stop water going into or out of the tank (tank should now be empty and feel much lighter).
  2. Cut a small piece of 1/4" tubing to insert into the WHITE push fitting of the sanitising housing.
  3. Disconnect the 1/4" INLET tubing (this is the tubing from the SUPPLY valve that goes to the system) and connect the this to the BLUE side of the housing. NOTE: the housing has an arrow to show you the direction of flow and it must be placed the correct way round, ensuring the arrow is pointing in the flow direction.
  4. Unscrew the bowl of the sanitising housing and put a Milton Tablet there. Screw it back on, then open the incoming water and let the system fill up. Allow to sit for 30 minutes, then flush the water out by running the tap. Leave the tap running or 10 minutes and then reinstall the fillters (or do not do this and move onto tank sanitisation).

Tank Sanitisation:

  1. First turn on the tap to drain the tank and when finished shut off the incoming water at the inlet / feed in / supply valve. Turn off the tank valve to stop water going into or out of the tank (tank should now be empty and feel much lighter).
  2. Cut a small piece of 1/4" tubing to insert into the WHITE push fitting of the housing.
  3. Disconnect the 1/4" TANK VALVE tubing (this is the tubing from the TANK valve that goes to the system) and connect the this to the BLUE side of the hosuing. NOTE: the housing has an arrow to show you the direction of flow and it must be placed the correct way round, ensuring the arrow is pointing in the flow direction.
  4. Connect the other end of the housing to the incoming SUPPLY water and open this gently and let the water fill the tank up. This will more quickly fill the tank with the Milton Tablet mixed with unfiltered tap water. When the tank is full, turn off the tank valve.
  5. Allow to sit for 30 minutes. Then disconnect the tubing to the tank valve and hold the tank over the sink, pointing the value to the drain. Open the tank to allow all the water inside to come out quickly.
  6. The tank will now be sanitised and you can now change the filters too. The tank should be filled and emptied once more before we recommend using the filtered water.

Product Questions

Hi,
I recently purchased a new water system without a tank. I have 3 filters at the front, membrane and 2 post filters on a pump. How do I do sanitisation and when? Video and instructions are all with the tank system.
Many thanks

You would just need to take all the filters out, put them Milton tablets , maybe 2, in the first filter housing and maybe break the second tablet into two and put one in third housing and one in membrane housing. Then with the tap off, slowly turn the water back on and allow the system to refill and then turn the incoming water back off. Let it sit full for 5-10 minutes and then, open the incoming water and slowly at first run the tap and start flushing. Run the system like that flushing for around 10-15 minutes before installing the new filters.

Can the sanitising housing be left in-line or should it be removed after sanitisation?
Question by: Stephen Ralling on 14 May 2021, 11:28
We do not recommend leaving them on for long - as the housing might leak over time.

I have an RO system where the pre-filters do not have a separate housing. Can I leave them in place or will the old pre-filters stop the sanitation process from working? Can I somehow bypass the filters by connecting tubing together in some way? I am worried that if I mess about with the tubing I will never get it back together again.

In order to advise on this we would need to know which system you have, if you are able to send in images of your current system we will be able to further advise if you can bypass the filters during sanitisation, you can email us on info@osmiowater.co.uk or call us on 0330 113 7181 for further advice.
