Water Filter FAQs

General Drinking Water Filter Questions

1. There are too many choices available. Where do I start?

The easiest thing to do is call us FREE on 0330 113 7181 and we can talk about your needs and recommend an appropriate product. Alternatively email us at info@osmio.biz. Alternatively you can have a look a comparing our systems.

2. How do our products compare to jug-style pitcher filters?

Pitcher or jug style filters generally rely on the use of activated carbon to filter the water and the force of gravity to push the water through it. The filters reduce the level of chlorine in the tap water. However the jug-style filters typically contain very small amounts of activated carbon and the contact time the water spends with the carbon in much less. Therefore, compared to under-sink systems, a jug-style filter will only filter a fraction of what a under-sink system can. They are a very clumsy, ineffective and costly solution for the home. A fully plumbed in system will be cheaper to run, produce better filtered water and be much for convenient by providing filtered water on tap.

3. What if I simply boil my drinking water, won' that do?

Boiling water for around two minutes is effective at killing harmful organisms such as e.coli, giardia and cryptosporidium. However, boiling does not remove many other contaminants such as heavy metals, and it may serve to bind and concentrate them. While these contaminants do not often cause immediate acute sickness, long-term exposure to them may be unhealthy, especially at concentrated levels, because for example our bodies may not expell all the lead we ingest leading to bio-accumulation..

4. Are the systems difficult to install, does it come with all the parts needed or do I need a plumber?

The systems are designed to be installed using standard DIY tools. You would need a drill, spanner, screwdriver and that's it! The systems come with full installation instructions and we have some example installation videos here to help you. You can always call us on 0330 113 7181 for advice and also take advantage of our installation service.

5. I have seen similar systems elsewhere that are cheaper than Osmio, are they the same thing?

The short answer is no and you really get what you pay for! The quality of water filters on the market does vary as does the price. Our products are made using the finest quality materials from reputable and world leading manufacturers and are rigorously tested and certified to meet International Health & Safety standards. We also carefully test and select each product ourselves, so if it's not good enough for us, there is no chance we will range the product. The market is flooded with cheap imitation products that are prone to all kinds of problems from the quality of the filtered water produced to plumbing problems. We avoid all of these issues by only selecting the finest range for our valued customers and are passionate about improving the health and well-being of people. Many suppliers offer cheap imitations but are much more expensive for replacement filters.

6. The replacement filters you sell look very similar to the ones we are buying (at a much higher price) elsewhere. Will your filters work on our existing system?

The most likely the answer is yes. Most water filters are made to industry standard sizing and our filters universal and do fit most other point-of-use and whole-house filter housings. If in any doubt, call us and let us know which model you have or even better email a photo of your system together with its physical measurements (diameter and length) and we will confirm for you. If any mistakes happen, you can always return the product to us and get a full no quibble refund.

7. How often do I need to replace the filters? What is the cost of maintaining the system?

When buying a system or replacement filters from us, we will provide you with reminders for when your filters are due replacement. Depending on your system and the types of filters used, these can be every 6-12 months or every 2-3 or 5 years. For reverse osmosis water filter systems it is recommended to use a TDS meter. TDS or Total Dissolved Solids is a general measure of the quality of the tap water. TDS is used as an indication of aesthetic characteristics of drinking water and as the aggregated indicator of the presence of a broad array of chemical contaminants.

The cost of maintaining our systems is surprisingly economical, for example after the 1st year, the average annual running costs of our drinking water filter systems is £35 per year, a fraction of the cost of bottled water, whilst the average cost of running a whole house water filter system is approximately £100 per year.
