How to prevent limescale buildup in your keetle

Limescale Buildup

Around 14 million households in the UK suffer from the effects of limescale simply because their homes are being served with a hard water supply. Hard water is caused by rainwater picking up hard minerals as it percolates through rocks such as chalk and limestone.

The hard water forms a residue in the kettle which stops its functioning as the limescale builds on the heating coils and the metal base. People tend to dislodge the limescale, which creates marks inside the kettle and it leaves chalky bits in the water.

Limescale Buildup So what is a limescale?

Limescale is the hard, off-white, chalky deposit found in kettles, hot-water boilers and the inside of inadequately maintained hot-water central heating systems. When hard water is heated, the calcium salt crystals begin to separate and spread out into the nearby surfaces and forms a layer of scale.

Limescale is formed in places which have a direct contact with hard water.

What are the problems?

Limescale builds up over time, this buildup is caused by the dissolved calcium sulfate which creates a layer of thick chalky white crust in the kettle, which, unfortunately, can't be removed by boiling the water. This coats up the heating elements; the nichrome, making it less efficient overtime, causing more energy intake or worse damage the kettle permanently.

So, how do you get rid of limescale?

There are many ways to remove limescale from the kettle. The most hassle-free method is to mix half white vinegar and half water (you can also use citric acid or baking soda) and leave to soak for an hour or two. Make sure you inform everyone in the house and unplug the kettle from the mains. Once soaked for few hours, boil the kettle, empty, and repeat again just with water, before you rinse it thoroughly.

Another method is by using a de-scaler, use 50 ml of de-scaler with 300 ml water and heat up the kettle but do not boil. Once heated up, soak for 30 minutes and then drain the water. Repeat as necessary. If you find thick limescale residue, try scrubbing it off.

This must be repeated every month as water from taps are still hard water.
